Listaproperty is headquarted in Dubai. And while we are proud of many the world records we hold: world’s tallest hotel, world’s tallest mall, world’s tallest building, world’s second cheapest metro, etc. We might not all be so proud of the carbon emissions. Many of us are interested in the green movement and are looking for ways to make our homes and apartments greener. But there is a notion that going green means spending a lot of green. That simply isn’t true. We offer up a few things you can do to make your home green on a budget.
Tip One: Look for the small things you can do. Many of us forget to change out A/C filters, to reseal weather stripping (a must in this very hot part of the world), or to simply get around to repairing that leaky faucet. Replacing a shower head with a low flow shower head is cheap and saves water. Click here for how to make your toilet a low-flow toilet using a plastic container.
Tip Two. The slow food movement. Some countries in this part of the world are self-sufficient in agriculture, but many countries import everything. How about dedicating a small part of your yard to a garden. Yes, you will use water to grow the vegetables, but that’s better than the amount of energy having it shipped from one continent to another. And how about using your grey water to water your newly planted vegetable garden?
Tip three. Turn that air conditioner up when you leave. Even in HOT-HOT Dubai, I turn my air conditioner up to 28 degrees when I leave the house. My house is not hot when I return and I save a lot of money on electric bills. If your windows face the afternoon sun, make sure to close the curtains when you leave the house for extended periods of time.
Tip four. All natural cleaners. You can make home made “green” housecleaners. They are safe for the environment, safe for your children and are inexpensive. Click here for a list.
These are just a few simple things you can do to go green this year. Not only will you save some dirhams, dinars, pounds and riyals but you’ll be saving the environment as well.
